SK-II – Was the 2nd Chance Worth It?

In Britney Spears’ voice: This is a story of a naïve girl.

It was 6 years ago when she gave SK-II a try. Back then when she was still a student, SK-II was very pricey, so she saved up her earnings from working as a part-time freelancer to buy herself some SK-IIs. It still is expensive, thanks to price increase of its products every now and then. She, like most women out there, somehow got herself “persuaded” by the never-ending advertisements shown on the TV and magazines to use SK-II for crystal-clear skin, and then she regretted it. VERY. MUCH. INDEED. Something basically murdered her skin. 6 years later, the same OCCASIONAL adventurous naïve lady decided to give this brand another go. On that fateful day, she met a nice SK-II consultant at Isetan, The Gardens Mid Valley, and she went home with these:

1. Gentle Cleansing Foam 125ml (RM 219)

2. Cellumination Mask-in Lotion 200ml (RM 269)

3. SK-II Facial Treatment Essence 330ml (rm 699)

4. GWP: Stempower Cream 15ml

5. GWP: 1 Facial Treatment Essence Mask (sheet mask)

*the end of the vocal narration, thank you!

Cellumination Mask-in Lotion, Facial Treatment Essence, & Facial Treatment Mask

The above picture shows these empty bottles, and I am going to share with you about them and the sheet mask. First, the mask-in lotion, which is a toner, was said to provide intense moisturization with some whitening benefits to the skin. This mask is AHA-free, so those with dry or sensitive skin could opt for this instead of SK-II’s regular Facial Treatment Clear Lotion. The Cellumination Mask-in Lotion was supposed to impart glow on my face, which I did not see but I have to agree that it is indeed very hydrating for my dehydrated, combination-dry skin. I like this toner, but I am not willing to fork out RM269 to repurchase it. I have tried other hydrating toners that worked just as good, but at a lower price.

What about the Holy Water that works like a magic potion for many men and women on earth? SK-II’s star product, Facial Treatment Essence is THE KEY to crystal clear skin. Who on the right mind does not want that? This is raved by many, yet disputed by quite a number, too. After diligently using up this big bottle, I was BUMMED. The first month was perfect, but after that my skin became inbalance, and it started to produce tiny bumps on my forehead and cheeks! However, I did purchase the smaller size available at the counter, which is 75ml, because I found one little GOODNESS in this Holy Water. This essence is really great if you are sunburned! All you need to do is pour some essence onto your palm and pat it on your dry, parched, burned skin (due to sun exposure) before feeling the burning sensation significantly reduced.

Lastly, I must THANK GOD for giving me wisdom not to splurge on SK-II’s sheet mask. I have always heard about the great things about this mask, but since I was given a sheet for free, I put my temptations on hold. After all, this sheet mask does not come cheap. The sheet masks are packed in a box of 6 sheets (6 usage only), and each box cost more than RM300. So, I put the mask on my face for 30 minutes and looked how smooth, hydrated, and radiant my skin was at THAT time, which was already at night. My pores were tightened, and I looked so healthy! I hit the sack right after that, and I woke up the next morning by big red bumps on my cheeks! I rarely have acne problem, and the mask gave me that in one night. Yayyyyy…………

I know there are many die-hard fans out there who swore by SK-II, but sorry, this poor consumer was of no luck, even when she gave SK-II another shot after 6 years. I was disappointed, but I will not let the search for crystal clear skin to end right there and then. Will I give try SK-II again another 6 years? I don’t know. Yes, I am vain, but I have pleasant experience with its gentle cleansing foam (reviewed here), so why not?

Have you tried SK-II before? How do you like it?

With love,

SK-II Facial Treatment Gentle Cleanser vs. Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Foam

I have heard people saying that cleansers are merely cleansers which are meant to be washed off, so any facial cleansers would work the same for their face. Regardless which skin type you have, there are different facial cleansers that are specially formulated to serve different purposes. My skin can be a bitch sometimes (okay, most of the time!), and come on, I know I am NOT alone! *cricket sound*

My face can be radiant one day and flaky or blemish-y the next, so I need a facial cleanser that do its job without drying me out. Today I am going to share with you about these two GENTLE facial cleansers: one for Japan and another from Korea, and since I can get naughty at times, I shall scare you with the more expensive one – Dear SK-II.

Both packaging are equally simply yet elegant.

Both packaging are equally simply yet elegant.

First off, I really love the rose scent which reminds me very much of Hazeline Snow as it is so calming. I am not against fragrance in any of my skin care products because I know I need it. Anything that smells great is good for the nose, the body, and the spirit, no?

This is all I need.

This is all I need.

The creamy foam will develop into soft, whipped foam when I add few drops of water and rub my hands together to spread the cleanser around my palm. I only need a little, and a little goes a loooooooong way, forcing me not to try other cleansers in the market.

This is how foamy it can get. Not too much foam, I like!

After washing it off, my face feels silky and smooth, without that squeaky clean feeling that I hate because I know squeakiness will happily cause me more dryness! This SK-II Facial Treatment Gentle Cleanser is overall nice to use for its calming scent and factor as I notice it does reduce the redness of my face, but I could not justify paying RM 219 for a 120g facial cleanser! I have tried cheaper alternatives that equally work as good, so I am uncertain with its future to be a staple for me.

The bottle of Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Foam is empty. Do I like it as much? I must Mr Hubby then because I RARELY use this gentle cleansing foam. Why? Initially, I bought this cleanser from Sulwhasoo as I wanted to find a replacement for my regular facial cleanser from Aesop. I like the idea of going all organic for my face, but that thought is not a must. When I heard about a number of incredible ingredients (Ginseng, Prunus Mume Flower Extract, Duckweed, Chestnut Shell Extracts, etc.), I decided to give this a go. Like any other products from Sulwhasoo, this gentle cleansing foam has an overpowering herbal scent (think: Ginseng), which many will detest. On the contrary, the scent was never an issue for me, so I do not mind paying RM120 for a 200ml bottle that smells like ginseng. In fact, I quite like the herbal scent; it made me feel healthy! Such is the power of fragrance in skin care products!

The remaining cleanser from the empty bottle. Tee-hee!

The translucent, gel-like texture is sticky, but it will turn into foam once I add some water in my palm and create lather. One pump is adequate enough for my face, and it actually does a decent job in cleansing my face. My skin feels so clean and refreshed, so what is the problem?

Considering the wee bit of cleanser left, it foams up really well! Those who love foam-y cleansers will like this!

I need to RUN to get my toner and follow-up with the rest of my skin care items right after that, or it will lead to my face feeling taut and dry. To be frank, I wanted to love this gentle cleansing foam, but my face would not allow me! I highly recommend those with combination skin to check this cleanser out if you do not mind the strong herbal scent! Mr Hubby’s face has been clear from occasional blemishes after using this, and he does not suffer from dryness like how I did!

Have you tried SK-II or Sulwhashoo’s cleansers? Do you like it?
